The Heirloom Gardener was started in 2003 by Jeremiath Gettle, who has a passion for preserving unique and colorful ethnic seed varieties before they totally disappear, and for fighting those corporations which are destroying much of the earth's genetic heritage through gene-altering and modern agricultural methods.

Jere Gettle had started the heirloom seed company Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds in 1998, and over the next few years saw a need for a publication that was dedicated to gardeners who grow the heirloom way. In the last few years, it has become a publication that is highly recognized in home gardening circles for having enlightening and entertaining articles.

Other projects we work on include America's largest Heirloom Gardening Festival, the web's largest heirloom gardening community (IDigMyGarden.com), educational programs and campaigns involving heirlooms, gene-altered food and a healthier diet. And of course we still operate Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, which publishes an annual color catalog with over 1000 rare and ethnic varieties.
